Utrecht Regional Qualifier Results – Top 8 Decks, Metagame, Popularity, Win & Conversion Rates!

Azir joins Master Yi as the only legends with two Regional Qualifier wins in Unleashed.
The top 8 was full of surprises, and even more fantastic plays !

The Utrecht Regional Qualifier has wrapped up over the weekend! Here is the tournament report and the latest decks from the event.

Tournament Report

If we look at what happened in Unleashed up until Utrecht, there is nothing to indicate this was a plausible scenario. With 8 different legends in the top cut, featuring Darius, Viktor, Sett or Annie for the first time while Irelia wasn't there, alongside an Azir against Viktor finals, I believe "Be good at Riftbound" is the best way to define the Utrecht championship.

It is the only explanation, and it makes a lot of sense when you look at the names battling for the win after the 13 swiss rounds.

The best Annie in the world, Prismaticism, finally managed to reach that coveted top cut with the Dark Child after missing out in Sydney and Vancouver. Collin K, arguably the best Sett in the world, also got the achievement with another legend who didn't seem able to.

Dhawalli, arguably one of the only players able to rival AlanZQ on Diana at the moment, went back to the top 4 after losing in the semi finals in Vancouver.

Joining them were three players from the same Spanish team, Micelion, piloting Azir, Darius and Rek'Sai respectively. If Rek'sai had a fantastic showing in Tianjin last week, not many believed it was a real top 8 contender in the West, while Darius wasn't on anyone's radar to make this far in a regional qualifier.

Yet, the most surprising feat of the weekend is Azir becoming the second legend in Unleashed to win two Regional tournaments, after Xi'an three weeks ago. The Emperor of the Sands showed it was a serious contender with that win plus a top 8 in Vancouver the following week, but still looked more like a competitive pick rather than a likely champion.

This is where the "Be good at Riftbound" catchphrase beats looking at the stats. Squirtle, a player who already won the Lille Regional qualifier with that same legend after the bans happened in Spiritforged, went on another undefeated run to win Utrecht.

Overall, Squirtle is on a 29-0-3 run with Azir in both tournaments combined. This isn't something you achieve through picking the best legend in the game, or looking at the results of every tournaments to figure out the best statistical pick.

Some players are simply better than the rest of the competition. In Utrecht, those players were unstoppable on their way to the top cut. Once there, they had to battle it out to find out who's best. I'm still not convinced Azir is the best legend in Riftbound, and but I'm certain Squirtle deserves to be in the conversation when it comes to players.

There is only one regional tournament left in Unleashed, Harford this upcoming weekend. For those trying to find the best strategy to reach their goal, it seems that there is no secret : Be good at Riftbound.
