Sydney Regional Qualifier Results – Top 8 & Best-of Decks, Metagame, Popularity, Win & Conversion Rates!

Curious about the metagame in the Sydney Regional Qualifier? Here is everything we know shortly after the tournament ended!

The first Regional Qualifier tournament for Unleashed is in the books, and there is a lot to unpack. Here are the best decks from the tournament for each legend, how the the event unfolded, as well as the metagame breakdown.

Tournament Report

First, the global metagame environment was pretty close to what City Challenges in China showed over the past two weeks. unl-199-leblanc-deceiver, sfd-195-irelia-blade-dancer, ogs-019-master-yi-wuju-bladesman and unl-197-diana-scorn-of-the-moon took the first four spots in the popularity contest, both on day 1 and 2.

The Deceived had a slightly worse conversion rate, at 18.2% when the other top tiers were above 20%. Already during the build up to this tournament, we could see LeBlanc was losing a bit of momentum, unable to progress like the other legends due to a specific play style she found early on. To be fair, if it wasn't for a peculiar build running OGN-242, LeBlanc could have stayed out of the top 8, and would have been a disappointment among contenders heading into the tournament. Speaking of staying out of the top cut, Master Yi failed to be part of that action, after looking dominant in day 1 with a 32% conversion rate, and one of the better win rates at 56%.

Tier 2 legends during the City Challenge part of Unleashed were the most entertaining to watch. Obviously, we will all remember sfd-203-sivir-battle-mistress's run to the finals, reminiscent of Miss Fortune in Bologna. On top of her second place, the Battle Mistress easily takes the Conversion Rate crown with 37.5%, and the best Win Rate at 61%, building the best case to be considered a Tier 1 threat going forward.

Other legends which improved their stock in Sydney are unl-193-vex-gloomist and unl-203-poppy-keeper-of-the-hammer. The Gloomist had solid numbers overall, with a 20% conversion rate alongside a 53% win rate, but mostly shone due to his incursion in the tournament's top 4. That list wasn't very different from the builds used in China, meaning Vex might have found its refined build, and now needs to be played a ton to reach its full potential.

As for Poppy, two players managed to reach the tournament's top 32 while no one recorded a top 8 in smaller tournaments up until Sydney. Unfortunately, this probably tells us more about the current power of OGN-160 than Poppy. Parts of the community were vocal about nerfing the card already. In Sydney, the 9-cost gear certainly proved it was a big part of the Unleashed metagame, and likely a way for most Body legends to post at least a decent performance.

Another Yordle is also worth mentioning: ogn-263-teemo-swift-scout. The swift scout surprised everyone with a top 8 performance. However, its 10% conversion rate and 44% win rate place Teemo pretty low in the rankings based on global metrics. I guess the only way to find out is to give that top 8 list a try and see if it is the way to play Teemo in order to find success.

The rest of the standings are fairly on par with what could be observed during smaller events leading up to that first Regional Qualifier. Now, we begin a period of high stakes tournaments every 2 weeks, meaning there isn't that much time to give the best performing decks a try, or switching to a different legend. I can't picture Riot stepping in at this point in the metagame to nerf anything, so expect Vancouver to play out similarly to this one, with the top 3 or 4 legends against Aurora decks battling for the win

All the deck lists shared in this article are the ones available shortly after the tournament ended. All best-of deck lists from Sydney will be part of our next tier list.
