Viktor – Overview, Strategy, and Key Synergies

The pinnacle of Hexcore has brought his legions to Riftbound. Find out more about Viktor here.

The fully biomechanical evolution of his former self, Viktor has embraced his Glorious Evolution and become something of a messiah to his followers. He sacrificed his own humanity under the logic that eliminating emotion would thereby eliminate suffering—and now seeks to bring the revelation of the hexcore to the rest of the world, even if they're incapable of understanding the benefit. After all, to this master of the arcane, violence is merely a variable necessary to balance the ultimate equation.

The ultimate form of Hextech's power, Viktor is the go-to Token deck in Riftbound's Origins set. Based in the domains of Mind and Order, Viktor aims to use his ability and cards to create tons of small combatants and overwhelm the battlefield strategically.

Viktor typically plays a hybrid deck, looking to swarm the board with recruit tokens early on, then use spells as support and removal to dominate the battlefield.
Against a slow, control based opponent, Viktor will take on the role of the aggressor, using the tokens to score for cheap early on, and build its lead on the scoreboard. In the later stages, OGN-233 and such effects will reward us for all those units we kept safe, now available to launch the final onslaught.
Midrange or aggressive opponents won't let us score for cheap, meaning we won't be able to keep many units alive when conquering a battlefield. Instead, we will use OGN-246 to replace those we lose in battle. Plus, the mix of Mind and Order offers a few solid units in the late game, such as OGN-092, OGN-208 or OGN-116, allowing OGN-265 to develop threats outside just a flurry of 1-might tokens.

The key to playing Viktor well is to understand our tokens are a resource we can use in various ways. They can represent our conquerors, stay safe at the base until buffed, serve as fodder to our bigger units, or even become our removal when paired with OGN-221.

His signature spell, OGN-266, has huge potential as it can take your enemy out of a showdown when both players have multiples units involved. However, the card doesn't appear in many tournament decks lately, probbably due to being considered a "Win More" type of ability. Indeed, if you manage to develop a large amount of units, you don't need the extra support on top.

OGN-117 is the weakest of the three, mostly because its cost represents too much of an investment for a 3-might unit. Indeed, the card can be taken out by many Red removal spells, all cheaper than OGN-117 cost us to develop.

Last, OGN-246 sees play in all Viktor builds, allowing to attack battlefields a little more carelessly when on the board. As our chosen champion, we can play the unit whenever we have multiple non-recruit units on the board, and send those to a battlefield we aim to conquer.
Our lost combatants will turn into 1-might tokens, meaning even a defeat doesn't set us back too much. If we conquer, not only we scored a point, we also have a flurry of cheap units available to use later.

Viktor will typically feature five type of cards :

  • Means to create token units, such as OGN-211 or OGN-239
  • These tokens will then be used to activate certain cards. OGN-209 is a perfect example of a very effective removal when one constantly has a 1-might recruit available.
  • Cards to buff our units, particularly effective against decks without a solid AoE available. OGN-233 will represent a finisher against those.
  • Support cards, particularly removal effects, to be able to deal with midsized or large units without having to sacrifice our entire army against it. Plus, those cards allow removing opposing units outside of showdowns, limiting the ways our opponent can react to it.
After OGN-105 removed our opponent's board, even a 1-might recruit is enough to conquer a battlefield.
  • A few large units to diversify our army. Indeed, we can't just accept to be crushed by any deck with a solid set of AoE available. Then, Viktor typically packs some midsized units to present different type of threats. OGN-116 emerged as a staple for any blue deck, but OGN-208 or OGN-092, even OGN-243 are good options as well.
