RIftbound TCG Ornn - Fire Below the Mountain Spiritforged SFD-189

Ornn – Best Decks & Cards

Ornn is the Freljordian spirit of forging and craftsmanship. He works in the solitude of a massive smithy, hammered out from the lava caverns beneath the volcano Hearth-Home. There he stokes bubbling cauldrons of molten rock to purify ores and fashion items of unsurpassed quality. When other deities—especially Volibear—walk the earth and meddle in mortal affairs, Ornn arises to put these impetuous beings back in their place, either with his trusty hammer or the fiery power of the mountains themselves.

Both the Calm and Mind domains are considered fantastic support, but lack raw power compared to Fury or Body cards, which typically limits their ability to dominate through proactive development.
This is the main challenge Ornn has to overcome in this new set : Find enough threats to force the opponent into adapting.

So far, the new legend has been building almost exclusively around SFD-085, supporting it in various ways. The card is perfectly in tune with its legend's ability, designed to use gears with a power-cost without having to recycle runes.

Unfortunately for SFD-189, this strategy is a risky one, and still needs that tournament win to prove it can be a force in the Spiritforged metagame. Indeed, relying on gears means being vulnerable to all those counter cards waiting in a lot of side decks such as OGN-224.
Plus, although SFD-085 is very resilient thanks to having Deflect 2, the card can still be sent back in hand or to base by Chaos cards, one of the dominant domain early in Spiritforged.

Ornn Signature Cards

Ornn is a unique legend when it comes to signature spell. The Fire below the mountain has three separates ones we are allowed to use one copy of, rather than one card we can include three times in our deck.
So far, the best performing build of Ornn uses SFD-192, a way to grant Ganking to SFD-085 and constantly threaten battlefields once set on the board. The 6-cost champion unit has become the backbone of its legend's strategy, so every card able to support it nicely will immediately be a consideration in that deck.

As a result, SFD-058 is left behind, not even included in the side deck as a possible turn two play when going second. The legend is clearly building for SFD-085 and would rater develop some gears in the early turns, or use OGN-047 to go from three to six runes.

Ornn Staple Cards and Synergies

Not having to pay the power-cost means OGN-081 only cost its ability to Ornn, and will allow ignoring most power-costs from now on. SFD-046 follows the same logic, representing another support Gear card card Ornn can ignore the power-cost of.

Except for these two, most other inclusion will be dictated by the question "How good are you alongside SFD-085 ?" :

  • OGN-077 and SFD-051 force the opponent to remove twice, while we deal with Chaos cards using OGN-045 or OGN-064
  • OGN-077 and other equipment will grant their buff, but also add strengths as the 6-cost unit grows the more gears we have in play.
  • SFD-043 and SFD-050 will allow moving our key around battlefields.
  • Because our key unit possess Deflect 2, opponents will be enticed to buff their own to come into battle more than target it. If they managed to bring a larger unit, SFD-053 would send it back to base.
  • When going second, OGN-047 will allow to go from three to six runes, and play SFD-085 on turn two.

Already, this list covers a large part of the deck featured on this page. OGN-116 and SFD-072 are the last cards worth mentioning, both allow conquering with something else than SFD-085, as they typically enter ready.
